Relief and Health Camp in Nuwakot

On April 25, 2015, the Gorkha Earthquake (7.8 magnitude) devastated Nepal, killing over 8,000 people, injuring more than 16,000, and leaving thousands homeless, with historical sites like Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, and Bhaktapur Durbar Square destroyed. Amakomaya (Mother’s Love), focused on supporting vulnerable groups such as pregnant women, infants, and the elderly, played a crucial role during this crisis, especially as stress and trauma heightened health risks like miscarriages. Operating in Rasuwa, Makwanpur, and Chitwan districts, Amakomaya had already equipped Female Community Health Volunteers (FCHVs) with smartphones running its app, which preserved vital health data even after local health posts collapsed. In partnership with Patan Academy of Health Science (PAHS), Amakomaya distributed nutritious food, sanitary pads, and Dettol soap to pregnant mothers and infants in Thulo Gaun and Dada Gaun, Rasuwa. A health camp held on May 30, 2015, across 12 wards (covering areas like Archela, Manakamana VDC, and Dada Gaun) provided antenatal, postnatal, and routine checkups for 130 women and raised awareness on breastfeeding, sanitation, and hygiene. A significant outcome was the diagnosis and immediate treatment of 10 women suffering from uterine prolapse, thanks to Ms. Rashmi Raj Upadhaya and Dr. Amit Arial, offering much-needed relief and health education in the aftermath of disaster.

1 World Connected

Amakomaya is a web and mobile application to help women in Nepal address the challenges of prenatal care, pregnancy, and maternal mortality. A team of local engineers and healthcare professionals developed Amakomaya after being awarded a US$ 4,000 grant from the Internet Society (ISOC) in 2011. Once a woman sets up her free profile on the application, she receives audio, video, and text content suited to her stage of her pregnancy.
